What is a vampire?
Lots of people want to know what a real vampire is. What is it? Is it an entity? Is it a race? In my personal opinion it is someone that requires a certain amount of extra sustenance, to remain healthy and continue to have their bodies produce some higher quality effects. I have heard several different theories on what vampirism is. Some say it is a mythical state, others claim it is a clique or lifestyle, believing everything is in our heads. What it may be, is something very realistic. It is not just a lifestyle, not just some kids at computers role-playing, but I think an entire subspecies all in its own.
After much reading, experiencing and some asking around, it seems some vampires have some unusual abilities. Many of these people had comparatively similar traits. Some of these traits shared are, an advanced healing rate above the average human, advanced mental and physical awareness, advanced mental psionic expansion, and accelerated physical prowess. Most of these effects come with similar needs as well. A well balanced, much needed, supplement that our bodies require, in a nutritionally needed fashion. The most common supplement that is available to sate this need is blood.
So why does a vampire need this added supplement? In my personal opinion, a human is like a battery, expending and recharging its energy. Every action uses a little of this energy continuously (working, cleaning, etc.). While everything like eating, sleeping and resting, allows the body to re-energise itself. It balances to the point where it takes nothing extra out of the normal everyday routine to sustain itself while there is no over exertion. Well if so, then what is to say a vampire is someone whose body uses more energy then it can produce to fuel different abilities? How would it keep itself charged and replace the extra expended energy? One answer to that would be adding a supplement to what a vampire requires, to remain healthy, or charged.
I have conversed with many vampires that claim they do not necessarily need to feed off blood. Although they do supplement their diet with high protein and/or differing additives (ambient energy, fruits, energy drinks, coffee, etc.). Similar negative effects are also generally related to a reduction of this supplement to their body. Vampires who do not "feed" seemingly share common side effects. Some similar side effects are, weight gain or fluctuation, immune system deficiency, and feelings of low activity and depression for extended periods.
Stories and myths about fantastical creatures, go back forever to times that tell tales of creatures of supernatural strength that drink human blood. Well before current documentation. Maybe we are just the products that created these myths and unusual anomalies through history. Passed down by vocal records, lost in each generation a little bit more. Without the benefit of modern scientific methods or knowledge of body processes, vampirism would not have made much sense to people in the past. With such limited knowledge, supernatural causes for what they saw or heard would have made just as much - or more - sense.
So I come back to the point of asking what a vampire is. Maybe it is a fantastic mythical creature, maybe it is some entity derived of demonic energies. More than likely, we are just creatures higher up on the evolution scale, or maybe a human that has flaws and disadvantages. No matter what we are, we are very real, as are our needs.
